RHS Tatton – the countdown to ‘2101’ continues

by Michael John McGarr With one month until we begin on site at RHS Tatton in Knutsford, it's all systems go here at Warnes McGarr & Co HQ in Greater Manchester. RHS Tatton takes place at Tatton Park in Cheshire from July 19 - 23, and we start the garden design build onsite from Monday, July 3. Last year, we achieved a silver medal at RHS Tatton with our 'From Hall to Home' garden and a gold medal, plus Best Construction in Show at BBC Gardeners World in Birmingham. So we're definitely looking to increase our medal count this year. Our Tatton garden design

Announcing 2101 – our RHS Tatton show garden

By Michael John McGarr Here at Warnes McGarr & Co we’re incredibly pleased to announce that our show garden design has been accepted for RHS Tatton 2017 in Cheshire. The garden is called simply ‘2101’ – and it’s going to be something of a showstopper. This will be our third year on the run at the Tatton Flower Show, in Knutsford, and we’re not ashamed to say that we’re going for gold. Our show garden will be in the Future Spaces category and it imagines what the average British garden will look like in the year 2101. New climate change models predict that by

More coverage for us – in INEX magazine

By Michael John McGarr I was thrilled to be asked by INEX magazine to contribute a piece of editorial about garden design trends for 2017, and about the outdoor living spaces we create. We're always researching innovation within outdoor living, such as aquaponics or new materials such as HI-MACS® or Accoya, to use within our residential consultations or show gardens. The article was published in the March issue of INEX, which is an online magazine about interiors and exterior design. I'm always happy to put together editorial about garden and landscape design for a specialist publication about trends, materials and how they come

Highly commended in the APL awards!

We took a trip down to London on Friday to attend the Association of Professional Landscapers’ annual awards. And we were incredibly pleased to find that a garden we designed and built was highly commended in the hard landscaping category. The garden, in Wigan, is an ultra-contemporary design, bringing together large format porcelain, with composite decking to provide interest. The homeowners had just invested in a new extension, so wanted their garden landscaped with different areas to relax, socialise and cook outdoors. To soften the hard landscaping elements, some colourful textural planting and edible plants were included, with plenty to provide birds

Garden designer Michael John McGarr featured in Lancashire Life

We are really pleased to be featured in February’s issue of Lancashire Life, with a feature about our chief creative and company founder Michael John McGarr. The interview by garden expert and photographer Linda Viney took place last summer so we’ve been eagerly awaiting the appearance of this feature. Linda came out to visit Michael at our new office and also at his own garden to chat about our show gardens, winning numerous awards, future plans and our business ethos. At the time, we had just begun our re-branding process and the new website was just being built so a lot

Designing a show garden is the perfect opportunity for us to unleash our creativity across design, planting and hard landscaping, but also

Looking back at 2016 – what a fantastic year!

By Michael John McGarr Although we’ve still been working hard in our office this week, it’s nice to take a little time to think about how much we’ve achieved in 2016. There’s been a lot of change and new direction this year and we’ve really laid the foundations for growing our business next year, with a very clear strategy. So here’s our round up of 2016, with some thoughts about what we’re doing in 2017. Winning the APL awards 2016 Back in March this year, we won an APL commendation for a garden we designed and landscaped in Wigan, in the under £20,000

Six insider tips for commissioning the best garden and landscape designer

By Michael John McGarr Many people make the decision to commission a re-design of their garden over Christmas and New Year. And who can blame them? With the beautiful winter's sun we've been witnessing over these past few days, it's been a joy to stare outside at my garden. With the sun casting its low, long shadows, it's hard not to make plans for the warmer months about how you can enjoy your outdoor space even more next year. We work all over the UK, but especially in the North West across Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire. However, where to begin with a

Concrete – the good, the bad and the ugly

by Michael John McGarr, chief creative and garden designer at Warnes McGarr & Co Let’s face it, this stuff is everywhere. There was a time in the garden building trade, namely from the 1960s onwards, that concrete seemed to be used on almost everything, including breakfast cereals. But does concrete have a place in modern garden design and building? The answer is, of course, both yes and no. For the majority of garden design and build, the dreaded concrete base panel and post system takes centre stage and somehow unfathomably seems to have been the number one choice for creating boundaries within the garden. And

We’ve been shortlisted for the APL awards!

Here at Warnes McGarr & Co, we are incredibly pleased to have been shortlisted for the APL awards 2017, in the hard landscaping category. The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) is our gardening and landscaping industry body, so any award or recognition from them is a great accolade for our fast-growing garden design and landscape business.
