Six insider tips for commissioning the best garden and landscape designer

By Michael John McGarr Many people make the decision to commission a re-design of their garden over Christmas and New Year. And who can blame them? With the beautiful winter's sun we've been witnessing over these past few days, it's been a joy to stare outside at my garden. With the sun casting its low, long shadows, it's hard not to make plans for the warmer months about how you can enjoy your outdoor space even more next year. We work all over the UK, but especially in the North West across Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire. However, where to begin with a

Concrete – the good, the bad and the ugly

by Michael John McGarr, chief creative and garden designer at Warnes McGarr & Co Let’s face it, this stuff is everywhere. There was a time in the garden building trade, namely from the 1960s onwards, that concrete seemed to be used on almost everything, including breakfast cereals. But does concrete have a place in modern garden design and building? The answer is, of course, both yes and no. We’ve been shortlisted for the APL awards!

Here at Warnes McGarr & Co, we are incredibly pleased to have been shortlisted for the APL awards 2017, in the hard landscaping category. At last year’s award ceremony, we were awarded a commendation in the ‘Gardens under £20,000’ category for a fabulous garden we designed and landscaped in Wigan, Lancashire. We were massively pleased with the garden design we submitted for the 2017 awards – and luckily so were our

New branding and direction for our garden design business

After a lot of thinking about growth and where we want to go with our work, we made the decision to re-brand our garden design business name, our logo and our website to reflect our new direction. Having previously been called MJM Landscape for our domestic work and Living Space for our show garden work, we decided that we needed one name to cover all our garden design work and consultancy. Our head of construction Robert Warnes had become a business partner of company founder and designer Michael McGarr a while back, but now the partnership has been formalised with our new

Tatton brings us another medal for our list of awards

As Monty Don calls it, ‘The great garden party in the North’, RHS Tatton (July 19-23) was fabulous this year, with a perfect heatwave hitting Cheshire AND we won a silver – our third award of the summer. We can’t lie to you – doing two show gardens in the space of four weeks was tough. Building a show garden means 15 hour days and can take up to two weeks from digging the foundations to dusting off the floor tiles with our socks, minutes before the judges walk round. We always work to incredibly high standards BUT RHS judges are

This garden utterly represents everything we do here at Warnes McGarr & Co. The outdoor kitchen has fast become our signature design, because it represents a new trend in how people use their gardens. In addition to this, it
